Fully utilize the New Castle Correctional Facility
The Miami Correctional Facility now houses Indiana inmates formally held in Kentucky prisons. At New Castle, 230 new jobs were created thanks to the correctional facility private management contract. In addition, the state of Arizona is paying to house inmates at New Castle and the training of Hoosier guards. This ensures Indiana has a prepared workforce when our state houses more inmates in the future.
Hire private companies to operate empty facilities
In 2006, a private company was hired to mange the New Castle Correctional Facility. The contract resulted in 230 new jobs. Costs were reduced by $3 million - a savings of nearly 17%.
Freeze hiring of non-custodial staff at the DOC
Streamlined top-heavy management, reduced non-custodial positions and hired more correctional officers.
