A $12 billion highway construction and economic development program called Major Moves, touches every part of our state. More than 400 new and major preservation projects, employing thousands of workers, will be constructed without a tax increase. Every county, city and town is also sharing in $150 million for local transportation projects. A solid transportation infrastructure is crucial to our economic growth and many companies have decided to locate or expand in Indiana based, in part, on the commitment to improving our infrastructure.
Job Makers.
Governor Daniels regularly meets with our state's university presidents to review their progress in pioneering new technologies and creating unique business partnerships to develop our future business leaders.
Back Home Again.
Governor Daniels has met with several hundred former Hoosiers to let them know about new job opportunities in Indiana. In 2008, the Department of Workforce Development will launch a service to match Hoosiers wishing to return to Indiana to current employment options.
Save Crane.
5,500 jobs were saved. Indiana has gone from "Saving Crane" to "Growing Crane." In 2006 ground was broken on a new technology park and the area is poised for future growth and development. Indiana's efforts to save Crane also brought approximately 1,000 new jobs to Fort Harrison.
IN Time.
In 2005, Indiana adopted daylight savings time. This move created new jobs (1,000 at FedEx in Indianapolis, for example). Also, Hoosiers now enjoy more light on summer evenings for outdoor activities. More of Indiana is on the same time, year-round, than ever before.
Coal Power.
Since 2005, companies have been granted $190 million in tax-exempt certificates to upgrade their facilities and tax incentives were provided for the construction of a gasification plant. Since 2005, the legislature has approved 73% of the goal for new power generation.
Future Gen.
Indiana has partnered with the State of Illinois on this project. Our proposal is currently under review by the companies making the selection.
