Indiana now ranks #1 in the midwest and #12 nationally for our business climate in the country, #8 for our overall cost of doing business, and #1 in international investment in the country in 2007 (Forbes Report, July 2007, Tax Foundation's State Business Tax Climate Index). CEO Magazine has also rated Indiana #4 in the midwest and #8 in the nation to do business.
Since taking office, over 60,000 new good-paying jobs have been committed by 2012 and some 50,000 more Hoosiers have jobs now than in 2005.
Mitch is securing good paying jobs, with an average annual salary of more than $39,000, or about $5500 more per year than the average Hoosier salary.
Indiana's unemployment rate is the lowest in the region. One economist described Indiana as an "island of growth" (IBJ, Dec 24-30, 2007).
Research and development sales tax exemption
In 2005, Governor Daniels signed legislation which exempts sales and use tax for research and development equipment. This step increases Indiana's competitive position in encouraging new business development in our state.
Increase research and development tax credit
Effective January 1, 2008, the tax credit for the first $1 million of research and development costs increased from 10% to 15%.
New Ventures.
In 2006, Governor Daniels signed a bill authorizing regional venture capital funds. $170 million has been committed to Indiana-based life sciences and agriculture funds. They are in the forefront of research on breast cancer, pediatric breathing, heart conditions, plus food and agricultural products.
